What is Kraft Paper?

Kraft paper, also called kraft board, is a strong paperboard material made from chemical pulp. Its durability, elasticity, and environmental benefits make it a common material in e-commerce and food packaging.

The Making of Kraft Paper

Carl Dahl invented Kraft paper in 1879. He named his newly created paper "kraft" after the German word for strong.

Even though you might not know it, Kraft paper packaging is already well-known in the printing and packaging industry. Regarding sustainable and eco-friendly packaging, almost every package uses this durable paper somehow. It can be a strong filler in the packages you receive or eloquently wrap gift boxes.

How did it come about?

During the papermaking process, wood is converted into wood pulp and paper. The lignin and cellulose in wood pulp form a type of cellular structure. As a result of its structure, lignin doesn't make a good paper, but cellulose does. There had to be a way to separate lignin from cellulose.

When Mr. Dahl boiled the wood chips, a tough fiber of lignin made up of sodium sulfide and sodium hydroxide, they separated from the cellulose. The remnants could then be screened through a mesh to remove larger pieces and made into paper.

The cooking process separates lignin and cellulose but doesn't completely remove them. This is what gives kraft paper its strength. In the paper pulp mixture, lignin and sulfur are still present. The combination of these two components contributes to the strength of kraft paper.

Brown kraft paper is a natural product of wood pulp. Bleaching kraft paper would increase its production costs and weaken it by destroying fibers that make it durable. However, bleached (white) kraft paper is stronger than conventional paper. You should use bleached kraft paper to prevent yellowing of your product packaging.

Kraft paper has many benefits for product packaging. Make kraft paper your packaging of choice for these reasons.

Kraft Paper: Benefits of Custom Packaging

Now that you know how kraft paper is made, what can it do for your business?

Natural Beauty with Timeless Appeal: Kraft Paper

Kraft paper's simple, appealing, and primitive appearance can help you position your business as an environmental champion. Due to its rustic appearance, this packaging differs from mass-produced paper packaging.

Aside from its attractive appearance, kraft paper offers a cost-effective solution for your custom boxes. It adds little weight, reducing your shipping costs while still being durable enough to withstand rough handling and shuffling.

The good news is that kraft paper can also be recycled. As far as the environment is concerned, Kraft paper has no negative impact because it degrades naturally. The product degrades within a few weeks but can also be saved and reused, maintaining your brand credibility as a forward-thinking, environmentally friendly company.

For Custom Kraft Boxes, Kraft Paper is Extremely Durable

Kraft paper is inherently strong due to its manufacturing process. However, PE or polyethylene can be coated on the resulting pressed paper to make it even stronger and better. This coating protects the kraft paper from moisture and bacteria and also makes recycling it more difficult.

Kraft boxes can be made even tougher using several layers of kraft paper.

The Environment Benefits From Brown Kraft Paper.

Kraft paper uses fewer chemicals than regular paper, which follows a much more complex process. Additionally, these chemicals can be recovered, recycled, and reused without losing quality. Tall oil and turpentine are byproducts of the kraft process, which can be used in other manufacturing processes.

Different kinds of wood can also be used to make Kraft paper. Traditional paper is only sometimes made from woods like bamboo or pine. Most ordinary uses of pine and bamboo are prohibitively expensive because pine is too resinous, and bamboo needs to be processed faster. The kraft paper process can be used effectively on both types of common woods.

It is self-sustaining, and parts aren't Reusable. It's a great option for businesses needing durability while keeping costs low and promoting green manufacturing.
