The 3 Levels of Packaging: Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Packaging

Packaging As A Primary Function

Packaging that directly contacts the product is known as primary packaging.

Imagine a world where your favorite cereals are less fresh and tasty than you expect them to be. This could be the reality if it weren't for primary packaging. The bag inside the box, which is the primary packaging, holds the cereal. Without this protective layer, all cereals in the box alone would be much more vulnerable. These products' taste, texture, and consistency can degrade due to staleness, moisture, or light exposure.

Essentially, primary packaging protects and preserves the product inside. In this example, the bags are clunky and prone to slipping, making them easy to slip out of your hands. Furthermore, they need to fit neatly into a cupboard. Because printing information on them is more difficult, we put the bag inside the box to keep the product fresh and out of light, moisture, and other elements that could harm it.

Primary packaging, often called retail packaging, is crucial in product presentation. In our cereal example, it's not just the bag that the cereal comes in but also the box that the bag is stored in. If you've ever been down the cereal aisle at the grocery store, you know that the brightly colored boxes with intricate images of cereal are designed to capture your attention. This is the power of primary packaging in influencing your purchasing decisions.

When it comes to primary packaging, you can think of it as the answer: Is this the packaging the product normally comes in? In that case, that would be considered its primary packaging. For instance, a can of carbonated drinks would be regarded as the primary packaging because it is how the product is delivered to the consumer.

Packaging for Secondary Use

Generally, secondary packaging groups a certain amount of products into a cohesive unit. SKUs, or Stock Keeping Units, make tracking inventory and stock movements easy for vendors. Products can be grouped to be tracked more easily with secondary packaging. The use of secondary packaging is common for smaller shipments of products.

There are several different types of packaging, including:

  • Boxes themselves
  • Padding in the interior
  • Separators for product separation
  • An additional layer of reinforcement has been added to the box to prevent crushing or denting.
  • In this way, etc.

Most people think of secondary packaging when they think of packaging. This secondary level of packaging includes everything from the branded e-commerce packaging you receive in the mail to the customized boxes that line the shelves of your local retail store.

Secondary packaging can be further customized to make a product more visible in a warehouse or retail store. For our cereal example, the secondary packaging would be the box containing multiple custom boxes of cereal to be stored in a warehouse before being sold at retail. A "fridge pack" for carbonated drinks also stores several cans together and provides an extra layer of protection.

It is possible for primary and secondary packaging to overlap at times. Often, retail stores receive shipments of new movies in boxes that double as display stands. In addition to protecting the item, the box, Even though the DVD case itself is not attractive, serves as retail packaging to catch the consumer's attention in how the movie is delivered.

Consumers will often see and interact with secondary packaging, particularly if it follows a two-in-one shipping and marketing approach like DVDs and carbonated drinks. If you plan on using your product similarly, the packaging design should consider how it can leave a lasting impression on your customers.

Packaging in the Tertiary Sector

A tertiary package is also called a bulk package or a transit package. It is used to transport larger quantities of goods safely and securely. For example, imagine several cereal boxes arriving on pallets at distribution centers.

Goods packaged in tertiary packaging are not only easy to handle, store, and ship, but they are also well-protected. Tertiary packaging often involves several cardboard boxes bundled with stretch wrap, providing a sturdy shield against jostling during transit and storage.

Tertiary packaging is often used to add another layer of protection to secondary packaging and group larger shipments together for storage and easy retrieval of SKUs, so consumers rarely see it.

What Is the Importance of Packaging Levels?

No matter if the items are being shipped in a large group or grouped for retail display or whether they are being packaged individually for consumption by customers, custom packaging at every stage is critical.

While consumers may not directly interact with tertiary packaging, its importance should not be underestimated. Packaging is a strategic consideration at every level, whether it's consumer-facing or not. Ensuring your product's safety during shipping and fulfillment is just as crucial as catching the consumer's eye on a retail shelf.

Of course, saving money while protecting your product is also understandable. Working with a knowledgeable, experienced packaging company can make all the difference between your goods arriving safe and sound and presenting as the best option to your customers and arriving damaged, broken, dented, crushed, or torn.
